The Tongue (VIDEO)
THE TONGUE - Don't let it tie-up your voice!
JUST 👀 at how hard your tongue works when producing sound 😵 This incredible video by Tyley Ross, shows him singing the same phrase in 4 different styles, and highlights the difference in the tongues position, amongst other things.
The tongue is one of the bodies strongest muscles and the only muscle attached at one end! #pubfact As well as eating, the tongue is also used for articulation when we speak or sing, and effects the voice in 2 different ways.
🔘 Acoustically - it shapes our resonate chambers to create specific sounds and vocal qualities.
🔘 Biomechanically - being attached directly to the hyoid bone it can affect the position of the larynx, the way that it functions and creates sound.
Being such a strong muscle and working constantly when speaking and singing, the group of muscles that make up the tongue collectively (yes there's more than one), often become fatigued and 'tight'. This 'tightness' effects our resonance, ability to create certain sounds, the ease of singing, and the position of the larynx, which in some cases causes compensatory behaviours that can be damaging to our instrument in the long term.

As a visual comparison, you can see in the image above all four mixes at exactly the same point in the song. The position of the tongue is different in each creating a different sound, but exactly the same not and vowel.
I'm hoping to show some interesting ways of stretching the tongue and releasing tongue tension very soon, but it could also be worth getting your tongue tension checked out by a professional. I treat the muscles of the tongue and floor of the mouth as part of every vocal massage session, because it is so influential on the voice. Don't get tongue tied!!
